1 Reason You Should Avoid Selling Ads. And 1 Reason You Shouldn’t.

What moves your audience?

Last month, Netflix launched its “Basic with Ads” membership plan for $6.99 a month. That gives people access to most of Netflix’s regular shows (some shows are unavailable with the Ads plan due to licensing restrictions).

And you’re exposed to an “average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour.” Basic with Ads users also can’t download titles and their maximum resolution is 720p HD. This move will bring in more revenue for Netflix, something shareholders highly appreciated.

Now, here’s the question: Would YOU want to rely on ad revenue for your solo or small business? This can apply to various situations:

  • If you’re a blogger or website marketer and an advertiser offers to run ads on your site in return for some profit, would you let them? (This is different from affiliate marketing).
  • If you’re running a business, whether it’s a brick-and-mortar shop or an e-commerce website; would you offer advertising space?
  • And so forth.

Now that large companies like Netflix who offer subscriptions start including ads in their business model, will that change the industry again?
