Are you also allergic to anything related to selling and marketing your writing?

If so, you’re probably someone who loves the act of writing. But at the same time, you also want to earn a living with your words so you can write full-time.

This is why building a writing career also requires a business mindset.

After consistently earning six figures a year from my writing over the past five years, I’ve found two things a writer needs to earn well from their writing:

  1. Write something with a high perceived worth — People will only pay money for your writing if they find it valuable enough. A good rule of thumb would be to ask yourself: “If I were in my reader’s shoes, and I only had X dollars to spend, would I still pay for this?” Readers are smart. You can’t trick people to give you money consistently.
  2. Stand out from the crowd — Look, no writing is truly original. We’ve heard it all and seen it all. That’s true for fiction and non-ficiton. What matters is that you tell your stories in a unique way.

Having a business mindset is important, and you want to think about generating revenue. But whether you’re a blogger, writer, or content creator, your primary job is to serve your readers.
