Why You Want to Forget About Branding
If you play it right, you don’t have to “work” on your brand at all
Personal branding and marketing are things that new entrepreneurs obsess about.
After all, if you market yourself well, you’ll get more leads and sales. And you’ll soon become successful, right?
But this thinking skips the most important thing: The actual work. A personal brand, or reputation, is something that comes based on the quality and effectiveness of your product or service.
The biggest proponent of branding, Gary Vaynerchuk, puts it well:
“It stuns me that people keep asking about how to start a personal brand… without having a clear understanding of what comes before that, which is actually knowing something about something..
To position yourself as an expert is difficult, but most people aren’t asking the first important question, which is: expert in what? What do you want to provide people with? What are you great at?”
There’s just no substitute for work done well. No amount of great marketing will make a bad product/service succeed.
